Understanding God

Read Romans 9:1 through 12:21

Isn’t a seemingly sudden change of character shocking in someone we thought we knew well? It’s disconcerting when a person steps out of the box we’ve constructed for him or her to live in. But it’s dangerous when we try to fit God into a box of our own making. To properly understand God, we must examine what He has revealed about himself in His Word and through His creation.

Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off (Romans 11:22).

When Israel failed to respond properly to God’s revelation of himself, the nation fell out of favor with God and into greater disobedience. God offers kindness to us when we obey, but if we turn away from Him, we too will experience His sternness and be cut off from His presence. It is best to stay in good relationship with God. We dare not take our position for granted—understanding God requires obedience.

Prayer Suggestion:

Lord, help me to remain humble by remembering the depths from which You raised me.
