Battle Cry

Read 1 Samuel 16:1 through 17:58

In 1876 missionary Mary Slessor sailed to Africa. Three years later she returned to Scotland to recuperate from malaria. Undaunted, she returned to Africa, this time living with natives. She spoke against cruel local punishments that killed people over minor issues. Through sharing the gospel, she changed many customs and superstitions. In 1915 Slessor died in a hut surrounded by her Christian family.

As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him (1 Samuel 17:48).

Thousands of years before Mary Slessor, a boy declared victory to his giant enemy before the battle even began. His most important weapon was not sword, spear, nor even his sling, but “the name of the Lord Almighty” (verse 45).

You may have battles to face, too, in your family, job, finances, and ministry. Declare Him the Lord Almighty who rules over everything on earth and in your life. Run toward those battles, confident in the Lord’s saving power.

Challenge for Today: Instead of crying about your battle, sound His battle cry!
