Hope in Despair

Read Jeremiah 31:1 through 32:44

God’s people were taken into captivity at the hands of a madman (Nebuchadnezzar). At a time when they faced deep despair and perhaps even wondered if God had forsaken them, God sent a message of hope to them through the prophet Jeremiah.

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3).

God reminded His people that He had not forsaken them in the desert; He would not do so now. He had appeared to them (as a pillar of fire by night and a cloud by day) when they seemed lost in a desolate land. He assured them He would be with them, even in their greatest moment of despair.

Although it would be many years before God’s people saw deliverance, He assured them of His unfailing love and kindness. It was the goodness of God that would sustain them in their darkest hour. It is the love and kindness of God that sustains us as well. No matter what we face today, know that God has not forsaken us.

Thought for Today:

When life is the darkest, God’s light shines the brightest.
