Begin with Prayer

Read Acts 1:1 through 3:26

They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers (Acts 1:14).

Jesus told His followers to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit’s power, they could never follow Jesus’ command to reach the world with the gospel message. While they waited, they prepared themselves in prayer to follow His orders. Why should believers pray about everything they do for the Lord?

Prayer helps us follow God’s plan, not our plan. God has given us the “big picture” in His Word, the Bible. We can also trust Him to fill in every detail we need to carry out the Great Commission wherever He has placed us, in our neighborhood, school, or job.

We need to do God’s work in God’s way. Prayer helps believers cultivate sensitivity to God’s heart and to follow His specific directions when revealed.

Jesus promised that God would give the Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13). Believers today can experience the same wonderful gift as Jesus’ followers at Pentecost.

Prayer Suggestion:

Jesus, teach me to pray.
